Lots of exciting programmes at two-day fringe festival
THE much-awaited Butterworth Fringe Festival (BFF) at the Padang Pemuda Merdeka, Butterworth, is back this weekend, for the fifth time. Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the events for today and tomorrow will start from 5pm till 11pm. “Organising the BFF is one of the programmes in line with the implementation of the Butterworth New Regeneration programmes, which serves as a catalyst in the economic development of Butterworth town through the organising of arts, culture and heritage festivals. “BFF is also one of the platforms for boosting the local economy development for Seberang Prai residents, ” Rozali told reporters after chairing a full council meeting at the MBSP headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam on Wednesday. The two-day event is being organised by the MBSP with the co-operation of Think City Sdn Bhd. It is supported by the Penang government and managed by TLM Event Sdn Bhd. Events such as eclectic musical performances and heritage shadow puppetry show to roving stilt walkers, risky street circus and thrilling fire performances, are among the highlights of the festival. The event will feature a total of 50 programmes spread across nine different zones, which are the Main Stage, Street Circus, Flame in the Dark, Pop-up Acts, The Art Alley, Arts and Crafts Market, Hands-on Workshops, Traditional Games and RM2 Food Carnival. “Over 100 talented local and international performers are slated to take part in the festival, turning the event into a platform to bolster the growth of the arts and culture activities while unearthing local creative talents at the same time, ” said TLM Event managing director Jack Wong. This year’s festival will feature some new homegrown acts alongside a host of international talents. Among some of the performers making their debut are Darmas, Muka Space and the Malaysian Puppetry Association and Azmi Hussin & Friends. Darmas is set to liven up the festival through the band’s creative fusion of traditional Malay rhythms such as joget, zapin and canggung with modern sounds of pop, salsa and samba, while Muka Space and the Malaysian Puppetry Association will be bringing ‘The Story of Ah Loy’ – a reimagined story of Ah Loy and his journey to save a dystopian city. Don’t leave the festival without getting your caricature done by Azmi Hussin & Friends to capture your cool Butterworth Fringe Festival moments. Korea-born Shin Woo loo, popularly known as Hello Potter, will add a little magic to the festival with family-friendly tricks. Naranja, the stilt walkers from the Netherlands, will give visitors something to look up to, while The Twins Trip from Argentina is expected to draw big crowds through a spellbinding combination of circus disciplines, dance moves and live music. With diverse musical styles, ranging from pop to classical as well as Malaysian traditional songs or folklore, homegrown UiTM Chamber Choir will be performing a cappella songs for a weekend of unforgettable sounds. Shoppers will find the Arts and Crafts Market a great place to shop for exclusive handmade products.
